WHAT ARE FESTOONS, MALAR BAGS and EYE BAGS?

Under the eyes, beneath the lower eyelid, and around the cheeks, festoons, and malar bags (or malar mounds) are swollen eye bags. Malar bags are a common sign of midface ageing and can contribute to a more aged and exhausted appearance. People with festoons or malar bags will have noticeably “puffier” eyes, resulting in a more extreme version of standard under-eye bags. In extreme cases, festoons may cause severe issues, including a visual obstruction in the periphery.

WHAT CAUSES MALAR BAGS TO DEVELOP?

The precise cause of malar bags is frequently complex and multifaceted. Several factors, including sun exposure, smoking, the ageing process, and genetics, can affect a person’s appearance. Malar bags are distinct from standard lower eye bags because they result from a structural defect in the skin of the lower lid and cheek areas.

Malar Bags are caused by a relaxation of the facial muscle that helps close the eyelids (the orbicularis muscle) and the skin and fat compartments. The tissues then form a loosely concentrated area, which can be exacerbated by fluid retention (oedema), resulting in swelling of the eye bags. As a result, many patients report that their bags worsen in the morning and improve throughout the day. When malar bags become more severe, festoons can develop, predominantly skin, muscle, and tissue folds.
