Dark Circles Under Eyes

Sun exposure and thinning skin can lead to pigmentation issues that cause dark circles as the skin appears darker from increased melanin in the skin or blood vessels that show through more. Volume loss can lead to hollows developing in the tear trough area (between the lower lid and cheek), which cast shadows beneath the eye and cause the look of eyebags, with puffiness resulting from a combination of sagging skin and fluid retention.

Similarly, certain inherited traits, like having thin lower eyelid skin, may cause the same prominent eye bags as old age. The nasal congestion experienced during hay fever can also affect the eye area, causing poor circulation, dilating the veins, and making them bigger and darker than before.
