SAGGING JOWLS

As we age, sagging jowls are a common concern for many of us. Here, at Aesthetics of The Royal Liver Building, the best Skin Clinic in Liverpool, we examine the efficacy of various treatments, ranging from exercise to plastic surgery.

As we age, sagging jowls are a common concern for many of us.

Loss of elasticity in the jowls is a problem that can affect anyone, regardless of their level of physical activity or diet quality.

However, this does not imply that it must simply be tolerated. There are a variety of treatment options for sagging jowls, ranging from simple exercises to cosmetic surgery. Some alternatives are more likely to be effective than others.

In this post, we examine briefly what jowls are and why they sag, as well as what can be done to prevent their sagging and treat the condition as needed.

WHAT ARE JOWLS?

Jowls is a common term for the skin beneath the chin and jawline, specifically sagging skin.

It refers to skin that appears bagged or saggy, skin that has lost elasticity and thus definition.

While jowls are not a medical concern and are not harmful in and of themselves, their appearance can be upsetting and have a negative effect on self-esteem and confidence.

Everyone is susceptible to developing jowls to some degree as they age, but the severity varies, as does the age at which they first appear.

JOWLS -
WHY DO WE GET THEM?

JOWLS - WHY DO WE GET THEM?

There are several causes for jowls, some of which we can partially control and others that we cannot.

The primary causes are age and genetics, two factors that we cannot significantly alter.

The skin in the cheeks and below the jawline is susceptible to losing the naturally produced collagen and elastin as we age. Both proteins contribute to the elasticity of the skin by connecting it to tissue and allowing it to return to its original form when we move.

Our jowls become visible as this elasticity diminishes; when collagen and elastin are depleted, there is less resistance to gravity, and the skin sags, or falls.

Linked to this is our genetics, as some individuals will experience collagen and elastin depletion earlier than others, and as early as their teens. For others, it will not occur for decades, or even until they are elderly.

Other factors are within our control, but it is important to note that in many instances, genetics will trump them; we could live a perfect lifestyle and still have prominent jowls due to our genes.

All the following have the potential to increase the likelihood of prominent jowls:

– Smoking. As with so many other ailments, smoking has negative consequences. Smoking causes blood vessels to constrict, making it more difficult for the body to distribute nutrients. Additionally, collagen and elastin production may be affected.

  • Significant exposure to the sun in particular, ultraviolet rays can reduce collagen production.
  • Weight loss, particularly fad diets as we gain weight, our skin stretches, and losing weight can lead to a problem of excess skin, which will inevitably sag.

There are additional minor factors, such as the claim that excessive screen time can cause prominent jowls due to the tendency to look down and not the technology itself.

BEFORE & AFTER

QUICK FIXES ON SAGGING JOWLS

Many seek a quick, simple, and cost-free solution for their sagging jowls.

The first tip is to address risk factors for sagging jowls, such as quitting or cutting back on smoking and decreasing sun exposure (especially when not protected by a quality sun block).

This will not eliminate jowls, but it may prevent their deterioration.

It is important to note that there is no formal evidence that any exercise can specifically reduce the appearance of jowls, but there are exercises you can try.

Nonetheless, there are some proponents of the following:

CHIN EXERCISES

Close your mouth, then protrude your lower jaw while simultaneously elevating your lower lip (maybe do this when nobody is looking). Hold the position for a few seconds, then repeat approximately twenty times; then repeat the entire procedure. The objective is to strengthen and define the jaw muscles through exercise.

NECK EXERCISES

Maintaining a level head, except for the neck, move the neck fully back and then forward. Keeping your head level, your jaw should protrude as you advance.
