Soft-side HBOT Chambers vs. Hard-side HBOT Chambers
Soft-side HBOT chambers are gaining popularity because they are fundamentally inflatable or portable hyperbaric chambers that can be installed at home.
Soft-side HBOT
Chambers vs. Hard-
side HBOT Chambers
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is an excellent way to use simple, natural oxygen in a
pressurised chamber to treat a wide range of conditions, including fibromyalgia, cerebral
palsy, PTSD, wound/injury healing, and many others.
However, soft chambers (also known as mild chambers) are NOT medical devices, are not rated to acceptable engineering standards, and do not provide the same benefits as hard chambers.

Therapy Liverpool
Here at Aesthetics of The Royal Liver Building, we have a dedicated and ultra-modern wellness wing where you can experience our unique and exclusive Hard 2.0ATA Hyperbaric chamber. A medical grade Monoplace Chamber that is not available anywhere else in the entire Liverpool Region.
Let’s take a closer look at both chambers to see what makes them so unique.

Hard HBOT Chambers
Hard HBOT Chambers
Hard monoplace and multiplace chambers are mechanically engineered and built from hard materials to withstand pressures of up to 3.0 atmospheres.
HBOT works by exposing the patient to 100% pure oxygen in an environment where atmospheric pressure can be increased and controlled precisely. While the patient is relaxing in the monoplace chamber, the pressure is gradually increased to 2.4 – 3.0 ata, allowing the body to be saturated with oxygen.
By analysing arterial blood gases, we can determine how much oxygen the body is receiving. The arterial blood oxygen level can reach 1,737 mmHg at this pressure. That is significantly higher than the 159mmHg obtained at normal air pressure. Multiplace chambers operate in a slightly different manner, but for the same general purpose. Instead of breathing pure oxygen in a pressurised chamber, patients sit in chambers with room air and breathe oxygen through a hood or mask. (These chambers are typically found in hospitals or trauma centres where quick responses to emergencies are required.)

In summary, hard-side HBOT chambers:
In summary, hard-side
HBOT chambers
- Provide 100% pure oxygen
- Can effectively stimulate wound healing
- Have a plethora of case studies to back up the science
- Can provide dozens of off-label treatments in addition to FDA-approved treatments by piping oxygen directly into the chamber from a liquid oxygen tank.
In terms of FDA-approved treatments, hard HBOT chambers are medical devices used to treat:
- Embolism of air/gas (bubbles in your blood vessels)
- Anaemia
- Diabetic foot ulcers
- Carbon monoxide poisoning/smoke inhalation
- Decompression syndrome
- Gangrene
- Diseases (in the skin or bone)
- Hypoxia (inadequate blood supply to parts of the body)
- Critical anaemia
- Skin grafts and flaps that may experience tissue death
- Wounds that do not heal
- Some off-label conditions that can benefit from hard HBOT chambers include:
- Alzheimer’s treatment
- Arthritis treatment
- Recovery from cosmetic surgery
- Alzheimer’s disease treatment
- Depression treatment
- Migraine treatment
- Psoriasis treatment
- Stroke treatment
- Atopic Dermatitis
- Slow down ageing
- Prevention of illnesses and disease
- IBS and gut issues
Soft Hyperbaric Oxygen Chambers
Soft Hyperbaric
Oxygen Chambers
A soft hyperbaric oxygen chamber is not the same as a hard chamber and cannot provide the same benefits or treat the same conditions.
These chambers are referred to as soft because they are typically made of a type of plastic that cannot withstand the pressures required to effectively saturate the body with oxygen.
You can purchase a soft-side chamber and set it up at home. This is what has sparked recent interest in these chambers, and many people are hoping to reap some of the HBOT benefits at home without the supervision of a professional or following any established procedures.

While hard-side chambers can use 100% oxygen at pressures of up to 3.0 ata, a mild chamber has very limited applications because it uses compressed air at pressures of less than 1.3 ata. It can only produce approximately 24% oxygen, resulting in arterial oxygen levels of 197mmHg. That’s not much more than normal air pressure of 157mmHg.
So, to summarise. Soft-side hyperbaric oxygen chambers provide:
So, to summarise. Soft-side hyperbaric oxygen chambers provide:
- ambient air (approximately 21% oxygen and a lot more nitrogen)
- pressurised air that tops out at 1.3 ata
- no evidence of wound healing or antibacterial properties
- no insurance company support
- Potentially contaminated air in the chamber
- More sessions required due to lower pressure and oxygen levels
- A chamber that is not intended to hold 100% oxygen

Although soft-side chambers are less expensive, there is no evidence that they can provide the same benefits and therapeutic value as hard-side chambers.
