Formerly considered an “alternative” treatment that few people had even heard of it is now gaining mainstream attention, with more doctors seeing the potential and recommending HBOT as part of a comprehensive solution.

There are, however, a few little-known facts about HBOT that are interesting and very important and relevant to your future treatment plan. Think about the following:

HBOT has been around for a very long time.

HBOT has been around
for a very long time.

Europe was quick to recognise the potential of HBOT, and by the 1870s, many countries were making hyperbaric chambers available to their patients. The first use of a hyperbaric chamber dates back much further, all the way to 1662, when British physician Hank Henshaw invented a vessel that was airtight, which ambient air could be hand-pumped using organ bellows.

HBOT was first used in the U.S in
the early twentieth century.

While early tests in the United States began in the 1920s, it wasn’t until the Navy began using the technology to treat divers suffering from decompression sickness in the 1940s that the medical community began to take it seriously. Still, it wasn’t until the 1960s that it was used to treat carbon monoxide poisoning.

Hyperbaric Therapy was originally used for
one purpose, but that quickly changed.

The use of HBOT to treat carbon monoxide poisoning and decompression sickness was only the beginning. It didn’t take long for doctors to start using it with many more indications once we started understanding the mechanisms behind the observed benefits. HBOT is now used to treat conditions such as plastic and cosmetic surgery recovery, necrotizing infections, diabetic ulcers, thermal burns, radiation wounds, and a variety of others.

A portable HBOT chamber cannot provide therapeutic levels of oxygen. The soft-side chamber has recently gained popularity, but it is only FDA-approved for altitude sickness treatment. This is only because the soft chamber is not designed to withstand the pressures required to produce meaningful results. It’s also worth noting that using HBOT chambers at home unsupervised to achieve the same results as an accredited HBOT provider can pose some serious risks.

HBOT Isn't Right for All.

There are a few conditions and situations in which hyperbaric oxygen therapy should not be used. If you have recently had ear surgery or an ear trauma, you should avoid HBOT. The same is true for colds or a fever. Furthermore, certain types of lung diseases may impair your body’s ability to cope with pure oxygen at high pressures, so you should wait until your doctor gives you the all-clear.

Many celebrities in the sports and entertainment industries have promoted hyperbaric oxygen therapy for anti-aging, because it keeps them feeling and looking younger. HBOT has reportedly been used and recommended by Michael Phelps, LeBron James, Keanu Reeves, Mark Wahlberg, among others. However, the trend can be traced all the way back to when Michael Jackson was photographed in a tabloid in a hyperbaric chamber dubbed a “fountain of youth.”

Scepticism .

Despite HBOTs history mounting evidence to the contrary, many traditional doctors and administrators remain sceptical. It’s difficult to believe that HBOT can be super beneficial to so many people when it’s just a breathable compound procedure. Some people are put off by the term “alternative treatment.” However, the more it is prescribed and researched, the more reason it is to become a mainstream solution.

COVID-19

HBOT is being researched for its potential use in the treatment of COVID-19. To be clear, the FDA has not cleared or authorised the use of any HBOT device to treat COVID-19 at this time. However, clinical trials are currently underway.
